Day 30- Is that a Boa constrictor or just my phone cord!

prompt- telephone    colored pencils
I have always loved the telephone! I love connecting with family and friends.
I was first allowed to use the phone as a right of passage when I was in the fifth grade.

My best friend Kathy and I would walk the 20 minutes home each day from Herrick Elementary chatting like magpies over the days events. When we arrived at her house we would say good bye and I'd walk the half block to my door. We were both "latch key" children (that means both parents work and you enter an empty place till they got home). So to stave off boredom till they arrived we would grab a snack and rush to the phone to see who dialed first.

Forget chores or homework because we had hours of catching up to do before the folks arrived.  I have no ideas what on earth we talked about but it bonded us forever as friends.

My love for talking on the phone continued through High school with numerous friends and boyfriends. When I met my true love we continued the habit. After every date (even though we lived less than 3 miles from one another) he would call as soon as he got through the door in case we missed something on his drive home!

Once we were married and he joined the Air Force and were transferred from California to places around the world. I still loved the phone but it was hard when every minute was accounted for and the bill would get expensive for those long distance calls back home.
Mike went to the Philippines for a year leaving me with 3 children under 5. Back in the 1980s it was snail mail or $30 a minute.

As our family grew from 3 children to 5 it got harder to spend time on the phone but not to be deterred I found the answer at the phone accessory store. For a few bucks I could purchase a 25 FOOT cord. No longer would a naughty child be just a finger tip from getting grabbed as they ran off, the clothes could be loaded in the washing machine, the bed made and I didn't miss a beat. I could share my most intimate troubles while I prepared dinner or changed a diaper!

The only draw back that I saw ( Mike and the kids may have felt there were a few others)
was that the 25ft cord seemed to have a mind of its own. It was able to twist, trip and tangle like a boa constrictor ready for lunch. At least once a week I had to take the cord off the phone spending 10 minutes straightening it out.

I still love the phone but now that it is cordless I can bring it everywhere. The funny thing is I don't TALK much on it because sending a text, taking a picture or Googling to prove I'm right has given it more portable pleasure than I could have imagined.

Prompt- ice cream        stencil paste + ink
Nothing feels more like summertime than grabbing an ice cream cone at your favorite place.
Giving a child or grandchild their first taste of that creamy cold stuff is always a memory.
And teaching them the "I scream for ice cream " song is the cherry on top!

Day 25: When school was just rice and beans

prompt 25- organic/botanical
I think the kids of the 1960-70s had more fun in school than the generations after us.

First of all most of us didn't go to pre-school so kindergarten was our first real experience away from home. Our biggest adjustments were learning to sit still, write our name, take a nap on command and do tons of hands on learning!

Play and art were one and the same. We were given easels with paper and big brushes to scoop up brightly colored paint, safety scissors, construction paper + Elmer's glue to decorate shoe boxes to keep our stuff in and reminded of course not to eat the paste.

I guess when I thought about organic/botanical my brain jumped to those early years when we made flowers and other decoration with glue and rice, seeds and beans.

Day 23: Romance-You have to scratch below the surface

Prompt-romance
Day 23- Romance conjures up many images but trying to keep it simple for a 3x5 index card I thought a stroll in the rain created in  scratched oil pastel would do.

Day 22- If one pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small then it should fit on an index card !

Prompt- psychedelic
The first thing that came to my mind was the Jefferson Airplane song "Go ask Alice"
when the icad2015 prompt was psychedelic.

Day 19- Is that a Snow Globe or just the glitter between my ears?

Prompt- snow globes
Snow globes are so beautiful and fun. Everyone enjoys picking one up and shaking the life out of it and watching the swirling glitter fall back in place.

But snow globes also remind me of my head.  A least once a day someone comes along and shakes me up. I seem to have so much stuff swirling around ( thoughts, ideas, dreams, things to do, etc) I finally have to sit down and let the ideas and thoughts drift back in place so I can see clearly once again.

tree house collage
Day 17 -fun way to use up scraps

Day17- Please pass the WABI SABI

Prompt17: wabi sabi
Understanding the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi put a small strain on the brain today.
I see its relationship to its Western cousin- Minimalism but its much more than that.
I will make some time this year and explore its meaning in my art. There is such beauty in simplicity.

Maybe In fascinated by it because it reflects aspects of my life motto
LIVE SIMPLY THAT OTHERS MIGHT SIMPLY LIVE

Day 15- Who gets this "greeting" card ?

Prompt: greeting card
So what do you think when you hear "greeting" card?
I think flowers, sunsets, waves on the beach along with sappy sentiment and words you don't really mean.
Ive always appreciated the funny snarky kind of birthday or all occasion card.
I'm sure I wont be sending this to anyone in the near future but it might be useful to have a few made up to leave anonymously.

NAT KING COLE ROUTE 66

Day 15: Ford Falcon, Nat King Cole + Route 66

3x5 collage
a "hot" car

Day 15 brings Icad2015 to the prompt: Route 66.

As a native Californian raised in the San Fernando Valley we had lots of "road trips" on Route 66 in the 1960-70s. My family owned land in Hesperia- the last town of Route 66 before the treacherous El Cajon Pass. We went to see that precious plot of dirt at least once a quarter. It was a dreaded day trip especially in the summer and it certainly lacked the glamor of the TV show or song. My sister and I traveled in the back seat of an unair-conditioned Ford Falcon, sweating with the hot blasts of desert air "cooling" us off, being told to hold it cause the next gas station was 50 miles down the road and there were no private places to pull over on the desert highway!
Most parents of that era didn't stop for food since they brought a picnic lunch. Ice chests weren't quite as effective as they are now so that usually meant soggy sandwiches and warm Coke.
Over the years as a military family we have traveled  Route 66 across the US only when necessary since the interstate is faster and safer. Living in Oklahoma has made us more aware of its nostalgia but I will always remember it as the hot desert road trips of my youth!
As an aside- the desert plots in Hesperia proved to be a great investment for my grandparents. They bought land there in the 1950s and sold in the1970s for a profit that financed their retirement.

Day 11 - The Illusive Mango Bird of Icadonia

3x5 watercolor
Im not much of a realistic painter. The idea of painting a lime and a mango- Prompt for Day 11 seemed most tedious.

Day 6- Pick Your Ride

3x5 Copic markers
We had the privilege of living in the Philippines many years ago.

They had very few traditional taxis because the main form of transportation was the brightly colored, customized and dangerously crowded JEEPNEY.
The friendly and creative people took the jeeps left from WW2 and repurposed them into magical taxis for the common man.

My children loved when it was their turn to pick which one we would ride in.

CompletelyCollaged.com: Day 2 The Mask Of Confession

CompletelyCollaged.com: Day 2 The Mask Of Confession

Day 2 The Mask Of Confession

3x5 + alcohol markers
Today's prompt is Carnival.

I had lots of ideas including a drawing of all the monkeys that dance around inside my head but I took a simpler path for this 3x5 index card.

I love all the beautiful masks during Mardis Gras and as I read a bit of history about this practice I learned that the English version is Shrove Tuesday. It comes from the past tense of the middle English word shrive meaning :to confess. Thus the title.
